GMO labeling initiative 522 has failed, proving once again that corporate money can buy food secrecy

Washington state I-522 looks to have narrowly failed at the ballot box. This link shows election results county by county.

At 11:00pm last night, the “no” votes were winning by approximately 55% to 44%. Mail-in votes reportedly have not been counted Dark-Figure-Walk-Secret-Shadowsyet, but unless a radical change appears in the final votes, I-522 will go down in history as yet another example of corporate money buying out the voters through a campaign of lies and deception.

The Grocery Manufacturers of America and most of the big-name food companies proved in this campaign that they are willing to operate a criminal conspiracy to cheat, lie and intentionally misinform voters. At stake is their continued way of doing business: SECRECY coupled with consumer ignorance.

In an honest election, I-522 would have easily passed

The last thing these companies want is for consumers to realize they’re buying poison. That’s why they plowed tens of millions of dollars into their disinfo campaign, hoping they could trick enough voters into not understanding what they were voting for. In an honest election that wasn’t primarily determined by money, I-522 would pass in a landslide, but in this election, much like Prop 37, corporate money allowed these companies to essentially buy their way to a ballot box victory that keeps consumers ignorant.

The Yes on 522 campaign ran a valiant campaign, and had voters not been deceived by the corporate-funded opposition, the ballot measure would have unquestionably passed. No person in their right mind would want LESS transparency on what’s in the foods we buy and consume. Every intelligent person, if allowed due consideration on the subject, will naturally conclude that the right to know what’s in our food is a fundamental human right.

The failure of 522 also shows that democracy itself doesn’t work when a tidal wave of corporate money is allowed to influence election outcomes. And that’s the way nearly all elections work, isn’t it? So even though we can all talk about the idealistic goal of “the People” being in charge of legislation, in reality the corporations have now seized so much power in America that even when the informed masses want to codify fundamental human rights into law, it cannot be readily achieved.

GMO labeling will never be won with money

After back-to-back failures of Prop 37 and I-522, I think it’s time we all realized we will never win this issue with money. As much as we all gave money to this campaign (and Dr. Bronner’s gave the most, I believe), the junk food manufacturers of this nation were able to spend almost twenty times more.

Selling the public toxic beverages and junk foods made with cheap “junk” ingredients is highly profitable, of course, so these companies have hundreds of millions of dollars to throw around like caged gorillas flinging excrement.

If we hope to ever see GMO labeling mandated in any state in America, victory is going to have to be achieved through “guerilla activism” methods that go far outside the box of “spending money on ads.”

I’m not criticizing the 522 campaign directors, by the way. They did a fantastic job. But the playbook they are working from is based on rules of conventional campaigning, not guerilla campaigning.

It’s much like the American colonists in the War of Independence who realized they would be slaughtered if they did battle with the occupying British by adhering to rigid formations. Man for man (and dollar for dollar), you can’t beat the establishment. What you need to invoke is asymmetrical warfare tactics such as guerilla warfare where colonists would hide in the bushes and ambush high-ranking British officers, thereby cutting off the leadership and causing disarray among the enemy ranks.

Don’t misunderstand my metaphor here: I am not suggesting anyone actually ambush and kill CEOs of junk food companies. This is merely an illustration of the fact that going head to head (dollar for dollar) with Pepsico, Coca-Cola and Monsanto is never going to result in victory for GMO labeling activists.

There are far more clever ways to multiply your efforts and make the actions of one person more impactful than millions of dollars in expenditures by the opposition.

Food banks brace for wave of hungry masses from federal food stamp cuts

The federal food stamp program known as the “Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program” (SNAP) has now been cut by a small amount — just $36 / month for a family of four. But even this tiny reduction in a national entitlement program is causing shockwaves acrossServing-Food-Poor-Beggar-Homeless the nation as food banks scramble to handle the anticipated surge in “hungry masses.”

“Food banks across the country, stretched thin in the aftermath of the recession, are bracing for more people coming through their doors in the wake of cuts to the federal food stamp program,” writes USA Today.

There are almost 50 million Americans on food stamps right now. A family of four used to receive roughly $600 / month from the government, but that amount has now been cut by around six percent. The fact that this $36 reduction is causing so much panic underscores just how deeply millions of Americans have come to depend on government money to simply survive.

Cuts deemed “catastrophic” for many people

These cuts, “will be close to catastrophic for many people,” said Ross Fraser, a spokesman for Feeding America, as quoted in a story by CBS News.

“It’s going to send people into a charitable system that’s already overwhelmed and screaming for help itself,” says Jim Weill of the Food Research and Action Center, also quoted in that same CBS story.

CBS somehow blames the massive increase in food stamps on the “housing crash” of 2006 – 2007, utterly failing to mention that widespread joblessness is being caused by Obama’s economic policies and the disastrous Obamacare program itself. Instead, CBS says:

…Participation in SNAP has soared during the epic downturn and ongoing job slump that followed the housing crash, with an additional 21 million people added to the rolls since 2008.

Already talk of “food riots”

“If you look across the world, riots always begin typically the same way: when people cannot afford to eat food,” said Margarette Purvis, the president and CEO of the Food Bank for New York City, as quoted in a Salon.com article.

“Our members are panicking,” Purvis told NBC News, adding that “We’re telling everyone to make sure that you are prepared for longer lines.”

The question on everybody’s minds, of course, is: What happens when the available food runs out and millions go hungry? While that scenario may not unfold this year, the fact that more and more people are losing their jobs and needing food stamps to survive inevitably puts an increased burden on food banks, too.

Don’t confuse SNAP food stamp program with “nutrition”

Just for the record, by the way, the federal food stamp program is full of fraud and abuse. People sell EBT cards for cash on Craigslist, for example, and many retail stores have been busted trading cash for card charges, allowing food stamp recipients to acquire cash they use to buy crack, meth or other drugs.

Even when used for food, the SNAP program is often used to buy toxic, highly-processed junk food products. EBT cards can be used to buy cookies, sodas, toxic hot dogs and processed meats, foods contaminated with pesticides and heavy metals, and other toxic products that drive up long-term health care costs.

Personally, I support having a basic food safety net in place for needy families but only if credits can be used to buy truly nutritious foods, not processed junk foods that enrich wealthy food corporations.

Why should taxpayers foot the bill, after all, for toxic products that make families and children sick? This is especially true when you consider that taxpayers have to pay a second time for the health care costs associated with such poor food habits. For every dollar spent on junk foods today, somebody’s going to have to pony up another $5 – $10 later on to cover the health care costs associated with that food. (Have you priced cancer treatments lately?)

The best food stamp program would be to end Obamacare and restore jobs across America

At the risk of offending socialist entitlement-state worshippers who remain astonishingly ignorant about economics, allow me to point out the obvious here: The only reason so many people are on food stamps is because their jobs are being systematically destroyed by disastrous government economic policies and the Obamacare program in particular.

Thanks to Obamacare, employers everywhere are slashing hours, cutting jobs and giving people pink slips in record numbers. The Obamacare mandate simply makes it too expensive to keep as many employees on the payroll, so they’re getting dropped.

Most people on food stamps would rather have a job that pays enough to buy their own food! But in this economic downfall that has accelerated since Obama’s election in 2008, there are fewer and fewer opportunities even for people who want to work.

Government agencies at all levels selling personal data to marketers!

How many times have you gone to your mailbox and found it stuffed with useless junk mail? If you’re like most Americans, you find that happens a lot. One of the major reasons why as much as 60 percent of the mail we get is worthless to us – and why we tend to get more of it after major life events – is because government agencies at virtually all levels are selling your personal information to scores of direct marketers.

Per CBS4 in Denver:

Eric Meer is a small business owner who works out of his home in Denver’s Stapleton neighborhood. Meer says he was deluged by direct mail after registering his small business with the Colorado Secretary of State. He says many of the ads he received were deceptive asking him to pay fees that he wasn’t required to pay.
‘It feels like betrayal’

Immediately Meer says he got a hunch that the Colorado Secretary of State’s office sold his business info to marketing firms. The local CBS affiliate found out that his hunch was correct; last year, the Secretary of State’s office raked in some $59,000 by selling business registration data.

Once again, so much for the Fourth Amendment’s privacy protections. As usual, everyone except the government has to respect it.
“It feels like a betrayal,” Meer said in what we believe is an understatement of epic proportions. “Because our government is supposed to protect us, not to sell our information and profit from us.”

And how.

Andrew Cole, a spokesman for the Secretary of State’s office, completely whiffed on explaining the sales. He told CBS4 that the business information is sold for anywhere between $200 and $12,000, depending on the frequency and amount of info requested.

But, he said, not to worry – the Secretary of State isn’t making any money on the sales. No. They are only charging as much as it takes to run the information for the purchasing marketer.

“We are not looking to make money,” said Cole. “We charge to cover our costs.”

Oh, okay then. By all means, go ahead and continue to violate the Constitution. Because that’s allowed, you see, as long as you’re not making a profit.

Who thinks like that?

What’s more, Cole says, businesses don’t have the option of opting out. He says anyone can buy the data, even scammers, because there is no process in place to screen requesting firms.

“It’s a public database,” Cole said. He said it’s “meant to be public” and part of running a transparent government.

My guess is that most business registrars a) don’t know that; and b) were not told that when they registered.

The data sold is pretty personal, as well. “The Secretary of State also sold voter registration information – including names, addresses and political party affiliation of voters – for $58,000, last year,” CBS4 reported.

Okay, so have you ever received a surge of confusing mail after you’ve either refinanced a house, been foreclosed upon or sold your home? Well, the local TV news found that that’s because the Denver Clerk and Recorder is selling that information as well. The department made $32,000 in income in 2012, in fact.

New legislation would allow health savings accounts to cover nutritional supplements

Two new pieces of legislation have been introduced before Congress that, if passed, will expand coverage options for individuals with either Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs). According to a recent Action Alert issued by the Alliance for Natural Health – USA (ANH-USA), funds held in both HSAs and FSAs would cover dietary supplements under the new bills, a major policy change that has the potential to dramatically cut healthcare costs and further promote health freedom.

Introduced by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), the Family and Retirement Health Investment Act of 2013 provisions that the term “medical care” be expanded in definition to include dietary supplements, allowing up to $1,000 from HSAs and FSAs to be spent on them for medical care each year. Additionally, Representative Erick Paulsen (R-MN) introduced House Resolution (H.R.) 2194 as a companion bill in the House.Buying-Supplements

Together, the bills would combine to establish a new policy of tolerance towards nutritional supplements, which are a keystone in the health and dietary regimens of millions of forward-thinking Americans. Currently, dietary supplements are excluded from virtually all insurance plans, which means patients must purchase them of their own accord at full cost. But the inclusion of dietary supplements in the scope of recognized medical care has the potential to change this and make natural treatments more affordable.

“This is important legislation because so many natural health advocates depend on HSAs and FSAs — they can be used for integrative doctor visits and treatments not covered by conventional insurance,” explains ANH-USA. “Expanding HSAs to include supplements will increase consumer access and choice, not to mention overall consumer health.”

Including supplements under HSAs, FSAs will dramatically cut healthcare costs

A major selling point for the legislation, which was previously rejected by Congress back during the 2011 legislative session, is that it will help drastically reduce healthcare costs all across the board. A 2012 study conducted by the Rand Corporation, for instance, found that families with HSAs or FSAs spent an average of 21 percent less on healthcare in the first year after switching from conventional insurance coverage.

The same study found that if even just half of all individuals currently covered by employer-sponsored insurance adopted HSAs or FSAs, healthcare costs as a whole would drop by at least $57 billion annually. This is obviously quite significant, as healthcare costs have reached epic proportions in recent years, showing no definitive signs of slowing within this for-profit medical paradigm.

Some worry adding coverage for supplements will be used as government backdoor for increased regulation

Furnishing the federal government with even more power over dietary supplements, however, may prove to be a mistake, say some. By allowing the government to essentially redefine dietary supplements to fit within the conventional medical system, there is the potential that rogue regulators will begin to take control over which dietary supplements people are allowed to access. Furthermore, the legislation also appears to make an erroneous assumption that the government possesses unique authority over dietary supplements, which could be a slippery slope for health freedom.

“I hope the expansion of ‘medical care’ to include dietary supplements is not the first step in having dietary supplements classified as a medicine, which therefore becomes a regulated product,” wrote one commenter at ANH-USA.

Secret flower planter threatened with arrest !

The real estate department from Washington’s Metro Transit system has recently become aware of unauthorized flowers springing up in planter boxes on public property. Along the north side of their Dupont Circle station, hundreds of mysterious morning glories and other flowers have been coming up in planter boxes along the Metro’s north escalators.Purple-Flower-Close-Up-Nature

Metro found out who the secret flower planter was when they received a polite letter on June 3 written by the flower planter himself, Henry Docter. Henry sent a letter asking permission to continue caring for hundreds of flowers he had planted a week earlier at the Metro transit system.

“Arrests, fines, and imprisonment” for planting flowers

Immediately, the Metro responded to Docter on June 11 with a “cease and desist” letter threatening “arrest, fines and imprisonment” if Docter tried to weed, water, or tend to the flowers. Concerned about public safety, Metro said that they didn’t want Docter or anyone else to be injured caring for flowers that were set in steep, cobblestone inclines.

The 52-year-old garden artist, Henry Docter, who has planted flowers in public places on four continents since 1979, said, “I’ve never gotten in trouble for planting flowers. Never has anyone overreacted with such an absence of common sense.”

Docter, who calls himself the “phantom planter” doesn’t deny that he is “a little nuts,” but planting flowers is something that he loves to do and has been doing for 34 years. “Flowers are nature’s way of affirming how beautiful life can be,” says Docter. He’s more famously known for his clandestine horticulture and the planting of more than 40,000 flowers at the American Embassies in Israel, Argentina, Spain and Cambodia.

A passion to garden – punished

Docter isn’t some freak on the street whose goal is to disrupt the public. Instead, Docter is a husband, father of two, part-time lawyer, author, and collage artist who just has a knack to garden. His friendly public gardening is loved by many.

A man who lives nearby the Metro station, Mike Stirratt, said that Docter’s passion for planting “is fantastic,” as he questioned the Metro’s threats of prosecution, “It seems incredibly unfair that they would prosecute you for doing something to help the neighborhood.”

As the issue gains more public attention, Docter hopes to raise awareness about his predicament with the Metro Station through an online petition. The petition has already drawn more than 2,000 signatures in a week.

Visit http://www.letmyflowersgrow.com/ to support Docter and a fellow team of neighborhood activists who are discussing ways to compromise with the Metro station.

Washington rejects restriction on honeybee-killing garden pesticide

Faceless, nameless bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., are once again demonstrating their ignorance of an issue by refusing to take a necessary action that literally could have an impact on the health and well-being of millions of Americans.

Officials at the Department of Agriculture are refusing to act on a request to restrict a certain class of backyard pesticides that are suspected of killing off scores of honey bees. From the Yakima Herald Republic newspaper:Bees-Hive-Honey-Comb

The department announced the decision Thursday following a 60-day review of a petition submitted by Thurston County commissioners. The county, at the request of county beekeepers, asked the department on April 8 to limit residential use of neonicotinoid pesticides used to kill aphids, weevils and other insects on ornamental plants. The insecticides also are used on crops, but limits on those uses were not requested.

EU imposes a two-year ban on ‘neonics’

The department said there was not enough evidence to support the request. “There is currently no documented evidence that the use of the neonicotinoid insecticides on ornamental plants is causing a significant adverse effect on honey bee colony health in Washington state,” department Director Bud Hover told Thurston County commissioners in a letter. “Because it has not been established that this use is a significant contributor to the decline of honey bee colonies in Thurston County or elsewhere in the state, the proposed use restrictions are not appropriate at this time.”

What’s more, both the Agriculture Department and the Environmental Protection Agency has said that the dramatic decline in bee populations are due to a number of factors – parasites, poor nutrition, disease, genetics and some pesticide exposure.

State agriculture officials said they would continue to monitor studies and ask federal regulators if additional pesticide restrictions might be needed at some point in the future.

European Union officials, however, are less hesitant. The EU recently imposed a two-year moratorium on neonics because of studies that link them to harm in bees.

Forbes magazine online sums up the situation:

It’s estimated that over the past five years, some 30 percent of bees in the United States have either disappeared or failed to survive to pollinate blossoms in the spring. That’s about 50 percent more than the rate expected. The problem is direr in some other countries.

Others say the trend of bee deaths is historical and not related to neonics, GMOs or anything else related to biotechnology.

But whatever the cause – and the skeptics of neonics have no hard data to prove they are right and the advocates of banning them are wrong – it is extremely worth it to find out exactly what is causing them to die off, considering that bee pollination is vital to the maintenance of our food supply.

Less food, higher prices without bee pollination

“A third of all our food is pollinated by honey bees,” commercial beekeeper James Doan told CBS News. “I think people just need to really be aware that bees are so important, not just for honey production, but for pollination in the United States.”

He notes that bees pollinate just about all our produce – from apples and pears to green beans, pumpkins, and squash, and so on. Without them – or without as many to do the job – the nation’s food supply will suffer. Crops won’t yield as well, and with a diminished supply will come higher prices.

Cancer is cured safely, in spite of widespread suppression by the “cancer industry”

Pioneering, dedicated researchers have discovered numerous holistic cancer treatments in this country beginning in 1840. These natural protocols save lives from “incurable” cancer.
Leading cancer experts and authors Dr. Samuel Epstein and Ralph Moss, author of the Cancer Industry, among others, have Pink-Ribbon-Cancer-Research-Komen-Curedocumented widespread efforts to thwart safe, cancer cures in the United States.

The FDA will only approve pharmaceutical, synthetic drugs for cancer treatments. However, even Burzynski’s attempts to patent and use lifesaving antineoplastons have met violent opposition. See award winning documentary: (http://burzynskimovie.com/ )

Most Americans continue using toxic and invasive radiation, chemotherapy and surgery to treat their cancers, with dubious results. A fortunate minority have discovered effective and safe “alternative cures”.

Hoxsey therapy and Essiatic Tea use potent herbs to cure cancer

Native Indians used the herb blood root to cure cancer for centuries. In 1840 John Hoxsey discovered the Hoxsey therapy which contained blood root, along with other herbs with anticancer properties. This treatment was used to successfully treat advanced cancers at 17 Hoxsey Cancer Clinics from 1924 to 1960, before being forced to close and move to Tijuana, Mexico. In 1954, ten physicians evaluated hundreds of case studies and patients, concluding that Hoxsey therapy left patients free from cancer from 6-24 years and in excellent health.

Essiatic tea, comprised of 4 types of herbs, was successfully used by Canadian nurse Rene Caisse, Dr. Brusch and several practitioners in Canada and the U.S. to reverse thousands of cases of advanced cancers. This formula also originated from Native Americans. It was destroyed by the Canadian Ministry when Caisse died in 1978. Dr. Brusch, in the U.S., was able to create a new version of the remedy, known as Flor-Essence and marketed as a detoxifying tea.

Nutritional “Gerson therapy” cures cancer

Brilliant physician Max Gerson developed the Gerson therapy in the 1930’s. This treatment combined organic vegetarian juices and coffee enemas to successfully treat thousands of patients from cancer and other diseases. Gerson published 50 medical papers and 3 books describing his treatment methods in detail. Gerson clinics were eliminated in the U.S., but exist in Mexico and Hungary, through the tireless efforts of Gerson’s daughter Charlotte. Gerson therapy continues to save lives. (www.Gerson.org)

Laetrile, vitamin B17, works like an anticancer smart bomb

Laetrile, a pure form of B17, has been used by physicians around the world with widely documented success to ingeniously treat cancer. The vitamin is found abundantly in certain cultural diets, where no cancer exists. American physician Binzel demonstrated an 87.3 success rates for advanced cancers treated with Laetrile, compared to 0.1 percent for cancers using conventional methods.

This is an interesting fact, every American physician who used Laetrile was arrested, taken to court, put in jail or had their medical license removed for the “crime” of curing cancer patients. The cancer industry went on to almost entirely eliminate the sale in the U.S .of apricot seeds, a rich source of vitamin B17.

Helpful ways to better afford organic food on a tight family budget

One of the biggest complaints among ordinary families trying to eat healthy is that clean, organic food is simply too expensive, and thus out of reach for the average budget. But eating right does not have to break the bank, especially when you know what to look for Farmers-Market-Organic-Produce-Veggies-And-Fruitsand how to shop for it. Here are some helpful tips for maximizing your food budget while still being able to afford the best foods for your family:

1) Buy local. Though not always certified organic by the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA), many of the foods sold at your local farmers market are likely grown using organic methods. In fact, many local farmers and backyard gardeners employ growing methods that exceed certified organic standards, and yet are able to sell their goods for less as a result of not having to pay for official USDA organic certification.

2) Take advantage of generic organic. If the grocery store is more your style, be on the lookout for store brand organic products, which are popping up all across the country. Popular grocery chains like Trader Joe’s, Costco, Publix, and many others now offer generic organic product lines that are significantly cheaper than the more expensive brands sold at higher-end grocery retailers.

3) Buy in bulk. You can also look for organic items sold in bulk, as purchasing in higher volumes will almost always translate into lower costs. Cereals, noodles, beans, sauces, oils, and various other packaged products will typically last quite a while on the shelf, which makes stocking up on such items, particularly when they are on sale, a great way to maximize your spending power.

4) Grow your own food. If you are not afraid of getting your hands dirty, you may also consider planting a few things of your own. Tomatoes, herbs, and squash, for instance, are relatively easy to cultivate at home. The average suburban backyard is capable of sustaining all of these in small plots, as well as a few fruit trees and other goodies, given the appropriate climate. Try planting just one or two crops and move forward from there – you might be surprised at how much food you can yield at home rather than buy from the store!

6) Become a coupon shopper. Some people still mistakenly believe that coupons are available only for cheap, processed foods on the conventional market. But many popular natural and organic brands also offer coupons, which can often be found in coupon books at the registers of health food stores. Many manufacturers also offer coupons on their company websites, so be sure to keep an eye out for these deals.

‘Let Them Eat Grass’ documentary exposes massive government tyranny against small-scale farmers

There is a war being waged against real food – no, not the heavily-processed, chemical-laden garbage that fills the aisles of most major supermarkets today, but actual wholesome food grown on clean, family-scale farms across the U.S. And the upcoming documentaryFarmer-Crops Let Them Eat Grass will expose the aggressors in this widespread fight, as well as urge people like us to fight back and defend our constitutional right to choose healthy food.

The film focuses on Wisconsin dairy farm Vernon Hershberger, who recently went to trial for the non-crime of providing healthy, unprocessed food to members of his private buying club. The Wisconsin state government went after Vernon, claiming he was in violation of state laws prohibiting the retail sale of food without a proper license, and tried to lock him up in prison for three years and bilk him for thousands of dollars in fines. But Vernon bravely stood his ground and fought back, and ultimately succeeded in stopping his state’s bureaucratic gestapo from trampling he and his family’s rights.

You can read all about Vernon’s victory here:  http://www.foodsafetynews.com

Unfortunately, what happened for the Hershberger family, though positive in every sense of the word, is quite rare in America today. If you have been following NaturalNews for any considerable period of time, you will likely recall that at least dozens of local farmers across the U.S. have been harassed by their state governments, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Department of Agriculture (USDA), and other government agencies for producing and distributing real food. And many of these cases ended in a victory for tyranny.

Take the case of Morningland Dairy in Missouri, for instance, where rogue regulators recently swooped in and destroyed hundreds of thousands of dollars of perfectly healthy aged cheese. As explained on Morningland’s website, and at the following link, the factory farm-controlled Missouri Milk Board forced Morningland to not only destroy its roughly $250,000 inventory of cheese, but also cease production, violating the constitutional rights of Joe and Denise Dixon, owners of Morningland:  http://www.naturalnews.com

“Please note: Due to unfair and dastardly undermining by Missouri state authorities, Morningland Dairy has been forced to cease production, recall healthful product, and cease selling our present aged cheese,” explains the Morningland Dairy website (http://morninglanddairy.webs.com/recallinfocourtaction.htm).

Family farmers, natural producers a constant target of the federal government tyranny machine

Morningland is just one example among many of the type of rogue authoritarianism our Founding Fathers were trying to escape when they settled in America. Government-sponsored terrorism continually takes place against not only family farmers, but also natural health clinics, supplement companies, alternative medicine research facilities, vitamin manufacturers, and others that operate outside the system.

This really hits home for me because I grew up on a farm and most of my dad’s family had large farms at one time. I really don’t like anyone telling me, I can’t choose to eat, natural good food. To read the full article, click on the link below.

Taxpayer dollars used to promote GMOs in other countries

Not content to allow Monsanto to poison Americans, the U.S. government is using your tax dollars to promote the bio-ag giant’s genetically modified food crops overseas as well, according to a new report.

Reuters says tax dollars are going to pay for overseas lobbying which promotes use of controversial biotech crops that have been developed by Monsanto and other seed manufacturers:        Gmo-Money

A review of 926 diplomatic cables of correspondence to and from the U.S. State Department and embassies in more than 100 countries found that State Department officials actively promoted the commercialization of specific biotech seeds, according to the report issued by Food & Water Watch, a nonprofit consumer protection group.

U.S. diplomats as surrogates for Monsanto

Officials sought to quash or downplay public criticism of key firms and negotiations between the seed companies and foreign governments “over issues like patents and intellectual property,” Reuters said, citing the report.

As if marketing to U.S. consumers wasn’t enough, now Monsanto wants to bring GM foods to the rest of the planet – and make you pay for the effort.

According to cables, U.S. diplomats were acting as surrogates for Monsanto, which is the world’s leading seed maker, in foreign companies – this after the agri-business giant paid a $1.5 million fine for allegedly bribing an Indonesian official, in violation of the Foreign Corrupt Business Practices Act of 2005.

A cable from 2009 indicates that the U.S. embassy in Spain sought “high-level U.S. government intervention” at the “urgent request” of Monsanto to battle bio-seed opponents in that country, the Food & Water Watch report found.

The report was based primarily on cables sent between 2005-2009 released by Wikileaks in 2010.

Justifying the unjustifiable

As expected, Monsanto justified its actions – including having you foot the bill for what can only be described as “official marketing” of its GM products by the U.S. government.

“We remain committed to sharing information so that individuals can better understand our business and our commitments to support farmers throughout the world as they work to meet the agriculture demands of our world’s growing population,” company spokesman Tom Helscher told Reuters.

What’s to “understand?” Monsanto wants to infect more customers with its genetically modified crops.  Also, par for the course, no one at the State Department wanted to comment on the report’s findings.

Proven harm
